Pécs

Pécs is the fifth largest city in Hungary, on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains in the country's southwest, in Baranya County. A city dating back to ancient times, settled by the Celts and the Romans, it was made an episcopal see in early medieval Hungary. It has the oldest university in the country, and is one of its major cultural centers. In fact, Pécs offers more culture per square meter than any other city in Hungary.

In 2010 Pécs, “The Borderless City,” was selected to be the European Capital of Culture (ECC) along with Essen, Germany and Istanbul, Turkey. Following the ECC award significant investments were made in Pécs, the most important ones include the building of the Kodály Music Hall, the Southern Transdanubia Regional Library and the Centre for Learning, the Street of Museums (Múzeumok utcája), and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter.
